Tempered Glass Screen Covers - Priceless!

 

My long-time workhorse, the Samsung Galaxy 12", developed a few fissures across the screen over the years. I credited the installed screen protector for holding the display together, making it usable. For a long time, not knowing much about it, I assumed I would eventually need to find a shop to replace the screen. Recently, I added a tempered glass screen protector to my TabS6 Lite, which I got as a very generous gift for Christmas. It works wonderfully and gives me peace of mind. Checking my Moto G2's phone screen recently, I discovered that beneath the tempered glass protector, the screen was flawless even though the screen cover itself had cracks. Thrilled by this, I decided to get a new one as soon as possible while still using the old one temporarily. I will get a new one for my Samsung Galaxy Book 12 inch. The $6-ish? dollars per cover is priceless to ongoing like-new screen protection!

Today, with a bit more confidence from testing my phone, I nervously and painstakingly lifted the edge of the Galaxy Book's screen protector to remove it. Since it had been on there for some time, it had some residue, which I later cleaned off. As the protector came off, I was delighted to see the screen beneath was flawless! One area appeared to have a crack still, near the corner, but it turned out to be dust trapped between the protector’s cracks and the screen. I’m extremely pleased with this.

I wanted to share this experience to illustrate the importance of screen protectors. The significant cracks depicted in the photos on this post were originally present on the protector, whereas the many micro-cracks occurred during its removal. To anyone unsure or hesitant about using a tempered glass screen protector, I strongly recommend it. I am not careful with my mobile devices, I throw them onto furniture, pack them hastily into bags, and occasionally drop them on the floor. However, due to the protection provided by tempered glass screen protectors, and impact-resistant cases (not visible here), the screens of my devices remain in excellent condition for many more years of use.  If you don’t have a tempered glass screen protector, even if it’s the only protection you use (without also using a case), it is an absolute must-have! I cannot recommend it enough.

Saturday sketchin - rockabilly zombie sketch

 

Enjoying a long memorial day weekend mostly off the computer taking a break from stream and work. But wanted to share some saturday sketching. Trying out a heavy toothy paper i got for christmas but havent used yet. I like it. Its super absorbant and has a texture almost like watercolor paper but it doesnt let heavy ink or alcohol marker bleed through or smear into eachother. Definitely has potential.Some kinda paper called Uplama.. not really sure!

First Sketchbook of 2022

The cover that I decorated this week live on stream. This sketchbook is 8.5x5.5 and I made it with unused printer paper sitting around my office, and with pizza box cardboard, then I added actual chip board outside of that to make a nice thick cover. I used a tan construction paper to wrap the outside of the cover and then painted and drew on it. Then the whole thing was covered in modge podge for a smooth and protective clear coat.

A couple pages already doodled on since finishing my 9th sketchbook of 2021. Even though this book's cover wasn't done - which I don't like to start using a sketchbook till the cover is decorated/ personalized -  I needed somewhere else to draw, and had this crisp new book bound and covered ready to roll. So I did things a bit out of order. But ah well! In sketchbooks there really are no rules.

Requests and Commissions are what pays, but a sketchbook is where the artist plays.

How many sketchbooks will I fill this year? I'm going to take my time, enjoy the sketch booking and we'll see what I end up with!

I finished my 10th and final sketchbook of 2020 this weekend! I wanted to share this crazy collection of drawing practice / personal journaling books with you guys. I've never finished this many sketchbooks ( or sketch journals ) in one year before. There was a time when I only completed one or less a year. Then as drawing became my main occupation and focus in life I started completing around 2 a year. As I grow artistically, and try to keep up and even progress my drawing skills while streaming and drawing live for people, I start filling sketchbooks pretty rapidly. I have also been using them as personal journals, to organize my thoughts, my daily to-dos and to clear my mind during stressful times. Journaling is also a great way to record and stow away random ideas and brainstorms for future projects and drawings. 

I used pre-made sketchbooks until the 6th sketchbook. I was inspired to make my own by watching channels on YouTube like SeaLemon and others. I made a simple saddle stitched sketchbook with materials I had sitting around. The 7th sketchbook I made with coptic stitch binding completely from materials I had around. The 8th and 9th were the same way. It was gratifying to create a usable sketchbook for no cost with materials I already had around the house. These were all variations of 8.5 x 5.5 or 8.5x6 sized books. The 10th sketchbook was an 8.5x11 sketchbook I had used sporadically in the background between finishing and starting other sketchbooks all year. I decided to finish it off for my last sketch journal of the year. I put the challenge upon myself to finish it before the new year, but it took me an extra week. 

I had a second 8.5x11 sketchbook I hadn't used yet, that I decided to cut down to make an 5 x 8 sketchbook. This is what I'm using for my first sketchbook of 2021. It was previously cut down to size and cover wrapped with blank paper for decorating making it ready to use. Today I drew and decorated the cover with an image that came to mind amongst current events.  It was sort of a way to emote my own thoughts and feelings on the current state of the world. Basically me/ my hat and headphones, with a gasmask. A syringe and rifle crossbones in the back. Between vaccine distributing, white supremacist riots at the capital, the continued onslaught of the Covid virus, and the effect its all having on all our lives, jobs and sanity... its comforting to have the safe space of my sketch journals to write, emote and express myself with drawing, and find some kind of stable ground. It gives me somewhere to stay focus on now, (not the present or past) and to relax, and escape for a while. Maybe this escape and realm to lean on is why I ended up with 10 of them last year. It was certainly a year with a lot of reasons to keep my head down and escape into my sketch journals. 

Now, the first one of 2021 is ready to use once it finishes drying. Happy drawing and journaling girls and boys! Thanks for looking and here's to a new year of drawing, journaling and exploration in a paper-filled place where you can do no wrong!

All art from today has been sent, and master-list updated. I am taking a few days around my birthday to have a long labor day weekend, and stepping away from my computer and streaming, and drawing requests and all of that. I'll be enjoying this quasi fall/ summer weather, enjoying some time off, and turning off my brain for several days. See you guys after the long weekend.

Upgrading to Inkscape 1.0 Beta for First Time

First impressions of Inkscape 1.0 beta ... loving it. 

Stopping point on some thorough play, experiment and trying some of the new toys. Too great. 

I'm thrilled to get Inkscape 1.0 Beta and have been having a lot of fun trying all the new bells and whistles, enjoying the polished interface, and even toying around with the new aesthetic abilities of the icon and interface themes. I am still getting use to some of the changes.

 My initial pros are, I love the canvas rotation, and I love the customizable interface. The standard interface looks polished and improved to look extra shiney in Windows 10. I dont know if things like the 3D object or the fill patterns are new but this new version has gotten me to stop what I'm doing, dive in to this new version to try and find and play with all the new features, and I think I'm discovering previously existing ones too. If you look closely, I made a hat symbol and turned it into the pattern. Some definite potential new features opening up for shading on future requests. 

My immediate cons are, I miss the slider for the brush size instead of pressing the up and down arrows or typing in the size that i want. It was nice just to quickly slide it. So that will actualy slow me down a bit mid drawing. I also have a problem with this new verison where as I draw and throw down strokes I'll get a random circle drawn that I was able to recreate on the right side. This isnt a huge thing but I dont know how to NOT make it do that. A final con is I have the brush size and the mass almost to beyond minimum settings and the brush still feels laggy/ muddy like I have the mass turned up. 

These could all be things I am doing wrong... I'm excited to figure it out! I truely had trouble with the extreme inverted high contrast theme, but I love the simpler icons and things like that. 

Lots to love, tons more for me to figure out. Heres a video demo I put on YouTube of my first fiddling with some of the settings I'm most excited about ( UI themes and canvas rotating )

1/12/2020 Update

I found the changes they made to the calligraphy pen, namely its mass and size controls, to be frustrating. The way the pressure sensitivity responds now feels laggy, heavy, and the mass changing doesnt have much effect. Not like it used to. Why would they even change this it worked fine before? Also after about two or three strokes of my drawing the program will drop a random circle shape. All these items made drawing in it effectively like I expect to do impossible, so for work purposes I removed the program and installed 0.92.4 back. In my opinion, and in my experience, drawing in and using Inkscape every day, this version is the most stable, responsive and functional version I've used since beginning to use Inkscape. I think 1.0 ruins a lot of what worked while offering new and exciting bells and whistles to enhance the experience. But I'm willing currently to sacrifice those new features in the interest of functionality. I cant wait for them to get it all right though! I definitely look forward to that!

Personalizing my new 2020 sketchbook

My first new sketchbook of 2020, ive drawn it it a few pages already but decorated the cover today and sealing the sharpie art with midge podge. Then I can continue to draw over it or color it with markers or what not without smearing the Sharpe draws... Letting this dry whilst messing with Inkscape 1.0  and straightening up the mill today... Its fun personalizing my sketchbooks!

Later same day, I added more colors with alcohol markers and white paint pen to the previous modge podge coating once it dried clear. then sealed it again with another coat of modge podge. Once this dries and turns clear it will be all done and I will resume my drawing an journaling an full this sketchbook up!



1/14/2020 Update

Here's a look at the finished sketchbook! The modge podge dries to a nice clear protective coating and the colors show through vibrant and rich! Even thought its not the 'outdoor' modge podge, it still protects the cover, the art and repels most substances that might smudge or smear it or mess it up! Thanks for looking!
