Retrying The Latest Version Of My Favorite Drawing Software

June 30, 2020

#inkscape #drawing

So, decided to retry Inkscape 1.0 again and do a proper fresh clean wipe of the 0.92.5 i was using and install 1.0. After figuring out some of the new features and adjusting to some of the differences, I finished my first full drawing in it! So far so good!

ewSKETCHBOOK: New Spen Brought Drawing On My Tablets Back To Life

Skully Goes To Work - Autodesk Sketchbook, Samsung Galaxy Book 12 and Note 9 Spen

#skull #drawing #autodesksketchbook #samsunggalaxybook12 #spen #note9

So, for months I've not really been using my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition, my first true drawing tablet for my art. Nor have I been using the Samsung Galaxy Book 12, my mobile work horse for unchaining me from my studio desk. Mainly this is because I have misplaced my Wacom Bamboo Smart stylus that I liked to draw with on both devices. I'll find it around the house somewhere eventually. Also the integrated Spen that came with the 10.1 was becoming unusable and showing its age or perhaps wearing out. I even recently played with cleaning its innards and putting a new tip on it and trying to get it working again. Its just made in a way where you cant get into it to replace anything and there's very little you can do once it starts getting unresponsive and "bad" for lack of a better way to describe it.

So I took a chance after much research on a Galaxy Note 9 ( yep the phone Ninja promoted ) Spen. The cool yellow one with the clicky button on the end. They changed the thickness, probably for easier gripping, but its overall the exact same as any Spen before it. I'd say its an upgrade from the one the 10.1 came with as well. It feels more responsive, but like it has more pressure levels and even has intuitive tilt like any Wacom stylus device.

This pen has been great. It fit snugly into a bic ballpoint pen case, which I like putting my Spens inside for a couple reasons. This extends the length to a more natural size in the palm, it protects the buttons on the pen and finally makes it a more natural round grip for long drawing sessions.

It has gotten me back into drawing on my mobile devices, brought the 10.1 back to life and allowed me to get work done once again on the Galaxy book. I got the Galaxy book so I could get more work done and not necessarily be confined to my studio desk and its time to start paying for itself!

Anyways, I wanted to say, I can not recommend the Wacom technology based Samsung Spen technology enough. They give you a felt, soft plastic and hard plastic tip to choose from. It doesn't need charging ever. And you can even access additional features by clicking the button and bringing up Air Command on basically any samsung device. The Spen allows you to draw fine lines, pressure sensitive lines and even hold the pen sidewayz and sketch like you would with the side of a pencil or charcoal.

Its brought life back to my mobile drawing, and most importantly, life back to my original ol' reliable 10.1. I'm particularly right now enjoying drawing with a brush in Autodesk sketchbook and then using the ballpoint pen to hatch in shading and texture rendering. There's something satisfying and therapeutic about shading that way and I will continue to play with that approach more. So you'll probably see more of that.

I noticed it really come alive when using Clip Studio Paint on the Galaxy Book, like it was made for it. I imagine any Adobe software that runs on Windows 10 would work great too.

So this is my overall follow up and review of my new Spen used on both an android Samsung 10.1 tablet and a Samsung Windows 10 PC Galaxy book 12 tablet.  Compare a refurbished any one of these, or even that new Tab4 S ( stands for Spen) and I believe its a better overall functionality and other value over any iPad and iPencil. Having said that, it's only how I feel and currently understand based on my internet observations and research. I have not actually used an iPad or iPencil. Though I can't imagine it'd much better.

Thanks for reading! Comment with any additional thoughts or questions in the comments below, or just leave an animated gif! I always like hearing what you all think, and will respond where I can!

EW Reviews: Star Trek Discovery Premier

September 25, 2017

#startrekdiscovery #discovery #startrek #trekkies #reviews

Please excuse the typos and such. This is just written gonzo style off the cuff:

Kristina and I watched the premier of this last night. Have to say ... its the most beautiful visually show on TV ive seen maybe ever. From the beautiful graphic design of the intro to the movie-level top notch visuals and you can tell the design department behind everything in this movie poured their heart and soul in it visually.

On the negative, dont they have more lights on that ship? I always liked how it was bright on the brigdge/ cooridors of the enterprise etc. And though i applaud the redesign of the look of the Klingons, im always going to prefer the original designs.from STNG and DP9 and so forth. Also im really not sure what era this is supposed to be as it feels like NEXT GENERATION of the jj abrahams kirk reboot movies.

On more high notes the personalities and exchanges between the characters ( the ones you got to hear lines from) are good and get you into the characters. Theres a BBT sheldon-type alien, a wise asian captain and a soldier-like aggressive first officer. The other characters just sorta fade into the back as generic officers. The pace of the story grabs you and pulls you along for the ride, which I love.  It'd be very binge-worthy pull you along episode to episode if not for being on cbs which has a commercial every 2 minutes ( seems like ). It seems its just the premier on Sunday night and the rest will be on 'cbs all access' on roku/ mobile devices? .... so basically wont watch the rest of it for that alone.

Thats two epic space series ( orville and discovery )_ that were like 'hey something cool on Sunday nights finaly' then turns out they're getting moved to Thursday which im sure will conflict with shows i already rather watch or be on a service we dont get or have any desire to get. but it was pretty likeable if you ignore the continuity of all the previous series and maybe even the jj abrahams movies? i really dont know where this fits in but was a gorgeous looking space drama that sucked you in with not a single moment of going ' ah well they cheaped out on those effects'... hellll no.

Rating: B+

If it was on netflix or a service people actually use, or just on CBS every Sunday i'd totaly be on board. I dont' like completely alienating long time fans with redesigns and breaking full continuity. But i suppose fans of the jj abrahams series will be ok with it. Also lights on the bridge please? How do they see to operate that ship.
I love the little drop ships for going out and working on things, and the space suits and other things you just didnt see in the original continuities.

EW's Reviews: Iron Fist: Initial Thoughts

March 18, 2017

#ironfist #marvel #Netflix #kungfu #hatersgonnahate #hgh

Just finished episode two of Iron Fist on netflix. Ashamed at letting myself be discouraged for it by negative bigot troll reviews and commentary on internet.

Kung Fu? Check. Threat oh The Hand? Check. Super powered punch? Check. Interesting story? Check. Cool wandering monk with no shoes vibe? Check check. Looking forward to the rest of it. Enjoyed it very much so far. Its already more likeable with more energy than the slow plodding luke and jessica series. This had a solid couple kungfu moments in the first 10 minutes!

Will give full feed back after finishing the series with an open mind, and no expectations going forward. I encourage all to do the same.

Cubium Dreams - Scary Stream Special 101316

October 13, 2016

@twitch #game #october #halloween #creepy

First of all thank you to the dozen folks or so who hungout shared this experience with me. Wow, all I can say this game was a pleasant surprise. So immersive and enveloping visually and via the ambient/ enhancing audio. Everything was based on cube-shapes but that did nothing but make it seem more surreal. About 6-7 (lost count) levels of puzzles and surreal comprehension of the world around you.
I won this game as a sub prize on LeFrenchStallion's stream as a random steam game giveaway and I couldn't be happier. I played it tonight as my first time ever playing past level one and it was entertaining and mysterious for the viewers it seemed like as much as it was suspenseful and exciting for me to play.

I beat it, it only took 2-1/2 hours to beat non stop but that was not without many many attempts. So i'd say its about  2 hours beginning to end if you really get through it smoothly. But if you get lost exploring and unlocking all the secrets I could see it taking much longer.

Great stuff, heres the replay if you missed it! If you have the chance to grab this cheapie game off steam, be sure to give it a go. One of the best gaming experiences ive had in years! So much worth the cost.

Intuos 2 Sine Wave Issue Resolved ( Heres How )

August 21, 2016

#wacom #intuos2 #sinewave #issue #drawing #troubleshooting

So I wanted to do a quick post about a problem that I've been dealing with the last week or two. It might have developed about two weeks ago but I didnt really notice till the Drawing Request Show streams I was doing this week. Theres a problem, that I've found is pretty common after browsing google searches and wacom forums. After years of use the Intuos2 from Wacom suddenly starts having fits of wavy-ness while drawing diagonal lines (and in the case of drawing circles, creating some crazy arse ovals). While irritating and throwing off my timed-drawings on the twitch stream on occassion, I was able to change location on my tablet or just deal with it till it quit doing it 10-15 seconds later. I was sure Inkscape maybe started having issues and needed reinstalled. But I went down the checklist. Heres a forum of folks with similar issue:

1. Updated/reinstalled Wacom tablet drivers.
2. Tested the stylus in Sketchbook pro and Photoshop as well which proved that it was doing it in them too. So it must be a universal influence in windows, or perhaps the tablet itself.
3. I went into 'Tablet PC' and 'Pen and Touch' options in Control Panel and made sure all that stuff was off. Pen and Touch had a few things on that might have interfered and it did seem to work better after turning them all off.
4. As you can see at the top, on the left is how it has been for years. Your first clue on how used it is might be the stained/ worn grip area above the button. I decided to replace the drawing tip. And also swapped that grip and button for a buttonless extra grip that came with it. Kinda nice as I didnt use the button anyways. When i took the button and grip off, you can see lots of inputs/ sensors for the buttons etc and a little screw. I shot some air in there cleaned it out a bit. When I took the nib out i blew in there a bit incase there was any dust or whatever in there too. Put a fresh nib on and the nice new buttonless grip.
5. Afterwards I read up on it more in the forum. Peoples solutions ranged from buying a new tablet, to buying a new stylus to removing the button and cleaning the gyzmos inside. Short of buying a new tablet I sort of inherently did this by removing the button, cleaning out the inside of the stylus and putting some new thingies on. Also turning off all that pen and touch stuff that seemed to be messing with it.
6. A final note, in the pen and touch area theres an area where it says 'automatic learning' where it collects info and learns about your handwriting style. I switched that to dont use automatic learning and delete any previously collected data. I have a suspicion that messed with stuff too. Who knows!

So it seems to be working normal again now. I believe the culpirate was the dirty button/ inside, cleaning it out and turning off any interfering utilites in windows. Time will tell though. At this point if it develops any new issues i might invest in a new offbrand tablet like huion or something. They're making competative desktoppads far cheaper than wacom...

Will do a follow up edit to this post if anything else happens. But for now, the steps above worked for me. Goodluck out there.

Amendment 8/22/16 - yeah the sine wave problem came back and twice as bad. I dont know if it ever really went away. Time for a replacement. Its ordered and on its way. #ripIntuos2

Bamboo Smart Super Gremlin Warmup

December 30, 2015

#gremlin #warmup #wacombamboo #bamboo #samsunggalaxy #stylus #digitalart

This is a sketchbook post, and sort of a 'first use' review. Got a Bamboo Smart stylus for christmas to use with my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet. Gotta say its a great upgrade. Feels natural in the hand, and is way more responsive than the s pen with pressure and glides on the screen more confidently for smoother lines, less 'slippery wiggle' from the smooth screen. I can't wait to get more practice in with it, and am excited to use it for some serious commission penciling and inking projects soon! I recommend it as an upgrade to the Spen. Only draw back I see at this point is the pen doesn't fit in the spen slot so it always remains seperate. Also, and this is without investigating if theres software on the wacom site or not, but the button on the pen seems to have the potential to be programmed but theres no way obvious to do so. Something to look into later. But heres my first official warm up sketch with it. Look forward to more!

Here it is:

Works great straight out of the box on any spen-equipped device and is a clear upgrade in ease of use and responsiveness.

Sword Art Online - Fantastic Random Discovery

April 9, 2014

Was shuffling through the anime series on Netflix this evening and randomly decided to checkout the series Sword Art Online. I was blown away by the highquality animation/CG mix and the music, and the time it took to really explore the wonder of their world. Then the awesomeness of this game world took a dark and scary twist. But I love the attitude of the main character in taking it on.
Really hiquality series, the first episode was amazing. MMORPG players who can wholey be in the game like the matrix are stuck and if they die in the game they die in real life. Only way out is to get through 100 ever increasingly difficult levels. But the execution of the animation and story telling and artwork and even the soundtrack is amaaazing. Right up there with .Hack Quantum - really look forward to watching more of this series on Netflix. As soon as the rockin end real and little epilogue bit was over I was quick to give it 5 stars. Thats rare for me.

Malware/ Adware and Viruses Oh My - A Malicious Software Protection Review

March 12, 2014

Even Dr Mario had Malware!
Wanted to do a short and sweet post to put down the results of some computer maintenance I did this morning. In my efforts to get some new plugins for my Winamp lastnight I am pretty sure I downloaded some malicious tag-alongs. Well this morning there was signs they didn't exactly leave so I proceeded to do a full malicious software scan. Here I want to list my 3 Anti-Virus/ Spyware softwares that I use as a 1st, 2nd and 3rd level of defense. One is good for your very very basic measily monitoring. If somethings blatantly obvious and aka I already know about it chances are, this one will find it.

Microsoft Security Essentials - this little bundle of joy is that one. Its mostly useless. And I'll demonstrate why in the next two I go over. It sits there, happy and green in your tray, with a little check mark. And unless it's been several days of not being connected to the internet it stays that way. But if you haven't updated or haven't been on the internet in several days, it can sour to yellow with an exclamation and red with an x pretty darn quick. This tempermental little bastard also is the most unsecure real-time malicious software security I've ever seen. Everytime I suspect I have something on my computer, I do a scan and low-and-behold it says 'YOUR GOOD TO GO, NOTHING FOUND, HOORAH!' I consider this the first level of security on my ol' EWG hub here. It will find popular or obvious stuff, and once or twice it has sniffed out and quarantined a trojan or something without ever telling me.  I just happen to check the history one time and like 'oh... when did that happen? thanks for telling me?' The second level of my 'triad of malicious software protection' is next.

Malware Bytes - Simply, it's the best middle ground between the two. The freeware is constantly updated with new malicious software libraries and it does a DARN good job. I'm pretty sure it finds stuff that isn't a danger at all and gets it out too. NO TOLERANCE FOR SHIFTY FILES MAN! But in all honesty its not high-performance. It really doesn't scrutinize and go that extra mile. It's a great second level and does what I expected MSE to do. A great thing about this is after the scan it will list everything it found and actualy has an understandable description of each one. This is nice. So, can learn about these harmful files if I want but usualy 'SELECT ALL' 'REMOOOVE'. The third is the best out of all three it is relentless in digging deep into system files and grabbing that nasty tick of malicious softwareness with a tight grip on the tweezers and ripping it from my poor poor computer.

Spybot Search and Destroy - Straight up the best. Offers recovery if you got rid of something you shouldn't have, immunizes browser and key internet related files and system files, is updated daily by like dozens of independent data sources international style and is thorough, thorough, thorough. My ONLY gripe is that it takes the longest to run a scan. There's no 'quick scan' or 'full scan' there's just 'SEARCH AND DESTROY'. But I take the taking longer than other programs as, it's being damn thorough. This one will categorize as Malware, as Adware as Spyware as Trojans and has daily updated libraries. Way more often than the other two. It found stuff the other two did not!

As a final comparison and in closing, Spybot is the best, but heavy, heavy duty. If you want a quick scan, use Malware Bytes it'll find near everything, but NOT everything in my opinion. Microsofts 'Essentials' is a nice little happy green thing to have running in the tray but is super light weight. I spare it from DERESSING only because I figure it's a good first line of defense for the simple stuff and will catch real-time stuff as I browse (maybe?..didnt last night actualy). To put it another way, here is this mornings results that prompted this article and I think it'll make my point in one nice final way. First, I ran Microsoft Security Essentials: Found no threats on my computer. (Are you kidding?). Second, I ran Malware Bytes, it found 46 malicious files on my computer. All of them were listed as ads/ business/ tracking cookies etc but nothing else or bigger. Third, I ran Spyware Search and Destroy - found a TROJAN and 4 more adware/ malware files.

In closing, thank you Spyware, for getting that SOB off my computer. To the other two, work harder boys.

Ultimate audio experience - Winamp 'Enhancer 017'

October 9, 2013

Actual screenshot of my settings lol
I did not know my bass could go THAT high. What we all normaly hear was in the middle to near the left.
And like I said, that Harmonic/ Ambience sliders.... heavenly. Simply heavenly!

Holy crap.... needed more cowbell in my music listening experience. specialy for these massive quality headphones. picked up a winamp plugin called 'Enhancer' by various winamp programming wiz of some sort. My god man LOL. I didnt know the bass could go that high. in the middle is what we all hear normay LOL. this is a screenshot of where the settings are at for me. by the way... those 'harmonic' and 'ambient' settings at the bottom.... make the 5 min searching for this and figuring out how to install it.... absolutely worth it. turns dubstep into freakin heaven. K, that was my rant to just say somethin bout the sweet audio controls i got. cause windows by default doesnt come with crap. not even a nice realtek dashboard. who needs it, i got winamp.

So after downloading and fittling with many non-impressive plugins, my fav is officialy Enhancer 017 by Adrian Losif - heres the link: http://www.winamp.com/plugin/enhancer-017/81361 man I can't say enough how this just opened up a can of music/ audio universe i was not previously part of. Great stuff!

If you have winamp. You need this. Its a DSP/Effect plug in. You install the download and then go to option/preferences/ under DSP/effect select it and hit 'cnofigure' and just lave that little palette open ... and have fun :) I can't figure out the presets yet but just moving the bars... wow what a difference!

Kay just had to gush about this. $30 Koss headphones and winamp, some killer playlists and this audio enhancer... golden.

Needless to say Livestreams will be crankin harder audibly, and etc :)

The Grandmaster

September 9, 2013

I saw this in a way maybe others wouldn't. It was definitely a love letter to kung fu, and though the story telling was a bit choppy, the movie opened with the most epic rain-filled kung fu showdown i've ever seen, and then played on with a wonderful contemplation on kung fu, its significance, and the role it played in this 30s-50s era. I give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. Only because the negative points to me is were it didn't focus on IpMan entirely, and also there were hardly any wide angles and many segway scenes that just used up film time that could have been used for something else.

Regardless, the film itself, is a new, and very interesting 'poetic' kung fu movie and one to be seen if you enjoy chinese/ kung fu/ especially older-era style kung fu films. I mean come on, whens the last time a kung fu film got released in major theatres in the US, crouching tiger? flying dagger? at least this one has IpMan in it!

My final word is 'It is worth one watch to see the film. It will surprise you, it will excite you, occassionaly it will mesmerize you and at moments it will bore or confuse you. But its worth one watch. Is it worth more than that? No... its not that charming. Watch IpMan and Ipman2 for fantastic, charming and highly entertaining stories centered around the legenedary grandmaster himself'.

3.5 out of 5

The 'Review' section features articles that reviews movies, animation, games and other influences on EWG's work on a daily basis. In this case, KungFu movies are a huge influence.
